Cleaning Wool Rugs and Carpets is a Whole Other Animal
Wool carpets are soft and can be beautiful. They are usually pretty expensive. When cleaning a wool carpet or rug there are some very important things you should be aware of.
Hi, I’m Michael Carlson and I have been a professional carpet cleaner in Anchorage Alaska for over 30 years. I have seen too many people damage their beautiful wool rugs and carpets so I thought I would share this little bit of information.
Vacuuming your wool rug frequently is extremely important. Use a vacuum with a beater bar that is set so the beater is just touching the top one third of the carpet fibers. Vacuum in both directions. The reason that vacuuming is so important is because wool has pocket like scales that can collect soil and the more tightly packed the pockets get then the more abrasive damage it does to the fibers. It also gets more difficult to clean the fibers.
While cleaning wool carpets there are several issues that are important to know. Use neutral PH products made for cleaning wool. Do not use alkaline products.
If you have to use an alkaline product to get a stain out then immediately neutralize with an acidic solution. Always dry the carpets as quickly as possible to avoid browning. I would put the fan on rooms just cleaned. Drying time is very important.
Test for color fastness. Some expensive handmade wool area rugs are made with natural dyes. These dyes bleed very easily. These rugs must be cleaned with a neutral PH cleaner and rinsed with an acidic solution. This helps keep the colors where they belong.
Never use Oxyclean or bleach solutions on wool. The only exception is you can use a 50/50 mix of hydrogen peroxide and water to clean the fringes on area rugs.
Enjoy your wool rugs.
